Northern Rail set to collapse in 'months', transport secretary Grant Shapps claims
The Northern Rail franchise is expected to collapse in "a number of months", the Transport Secretary has claimed.
Speaking in the House of Commons today (January 9), Mr Shapps said the government could nationalise the under-fire firm.
All trains currently run by Northern – which operates of South Yorkshire and Derbyshire – would then be controlled by a government-owned company.
The possibility of giving Northern franchise holders Arriva Rail North a ‘short-term management’ contract allowing them to continue running the trains was also mentioned.
