Motorists travelling on the M1 near Sheffield have been praised for adhering to the traffic signs that allowed the authorities to clear a stranded vehicle as quickly as possible.

Highways England tweeted at 4.04pm on Friday (December 27) said the traffic officers managed to clear the scene within minutes, thanks to the motorists' amazing response.

They said: "Excellent compliance to the red ‘X’ signs on the M1 southbound J34 Meadowhall to J33 Catcliffe.

"By complying with these signs, you can make it safer for the stranded motorist and traffic officers.

"We can then focus on clearing the vehicle quickly to reopen all lanes."

Highways England added: "Because of your compliance with the signs, our traffic officers were able to clear the carriageway in double quick time.

"We were on scene for a grand total of six minutes. Van now safe in refuge area. All lanes open."
