Highways England said shortly after 7.10pm that traffic was being held while its staff, along with officers from South Yorkshire Police, assessed the scene.

It issued an update at around 7.30pm, saying: “M1 from J31 Aston to J30 Barlborough is now CLOSED due to this incident. Traffic travelling south should leave the M1 at J31.”

About half an hour later, Highways England announced the road had reopened, but said there was still heavy traffic in the area which was likely to take some time to clear.

It added that lane one remained closed while officers arranged for the vehicles involved in the crash to be recovered.

Details of the collision, and whether anyone has been injured, have yet to be confirmed.
