Eight vehicle M1 pile-up causes rush hour traffic near Sheffield and Barnsley this morning

Ambulances were called to the M1 this morning following a massive pile-up in South Yorkshire.

A number of lanes were closed on the M1 southbound this morning, between junction 37 - leading to Dodworth and Barnsley town centre - and junction 36, near to Tankersley and Hoyland.

Just before 9am, traffic monitoring website AA was reporting ‘severe delays’ of over an hour as emergency services respond.

However, they have revealed that the collision involved eight vehicles just prior to junction 36.

South Yorkshire Police helped highway officers move vehicles to the hard shoulder.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service have said that they deployed multiple ambulances, though ultimately no one was taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for the service added: “We received an emergency call at 8.31am this morning to report a road traffic collision on the M1 between junctions 36 and 37.

“A number of ambulance resources were dispatched to the scene, including an ambulance and a team leader, but no patients were conveyed to hospital.”
