The famous lane is 700 yards long and has a gradient of up to 35 per cent - more than one-in-three. It is a popular cycling challenge.

But it has no passing places and walls on both sides.

Derbyshire County Council says a downhill ban could help stop vehicles becoming stuck or losing control.

Walkers, horse riders and cyclists are unaffected.

Bamford Clough is officially classified as a Byway Open to All Traffic.
