Crash causes more travel chaos on M1 near Sheffield and Barnsley

Crash affecting traffic north of Sheffield

Motorists are facing traffic jams this morning on the M1 after a crash near one of the city’s main motorway junctions.

Just before 8am, queueing traffic was reported on the northbound M1 between junction 36, which is signposted Sheffield North, and 37.

Both are in Barnsley, but junction 36 is widely used by people driving north from Sheffield.

National Highways described the incident as an ‘accident’ and said two of the three lanes were closed.

The AA is describing queuing traffic for two miles and two lanes closed due to accident, with travel time of up to 25 minutes.

South Yorkshire Police said: “At 7.23am today (Tuesday 20 October) we were called to reports of a multi vehicle damage only road traffic collision between J36 and J37 M1 northbound. The vehicles are currently in the process of being recovered.”

National Highways said ,traffic had been ‘held’ temporarily while traffic officers moved the two cars to the hard shoulder.

It comes following another collision which caused M1 disruption yesterday.

It was only announced this morning that a section of the M1 near junction 29 had re-opened after being closed for most of Monday after a collision between a van and a car.

Carriageway repairs were needed.
