A shop trader who gave commercial waste to three unknown men, who then fly-tipped the rubbish on a lane, has been fined £2,500.

Daniel McDonald, owner of the Floor Trader shop in High Street, Wombwell, Barnsley, admitted the offence when he appeared at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court.

He said the men produced a waste carriers’ licence but he didn’t know who they worked for.

They dumped 1.2 tonnes of rubbish on Ings Lane, Little Houghton.

McDonald was fined £2,500 and told to pay £240 court costs. He must also pay £680 and a victim surcharge of £120.

Business owners have a legal responsibility to ensure those taking waste away are authorised to dispose of it.
