A KASBAH-style market hall, cinema and double-level new shopping street are among highlights of a £70 million project which will see Barnsley’s Metropolitan shopping centre revamped and improvements made to May Day Green and transport interchange.

The project, designed by Architects CZWG and Holder Mathias, will be developed by a consortium called 1249 Regeneration Partnership, involving Wilson Bowden Developments Limited and Ashcroft Estates Limited, has now been granted planning permission.

The three-floor indoor market will be created in oriental Kasbah style. The revamped centre will feature a timber surrounded atrium and escalators, with a top-floor restaurant area.
