Tower block blaze in Sheffield was an arson attack

Five fire engines raced to a tower block in Sheffield this morning after an arson attack in a fifth floor flat.

The blaze in the Crawshaw block, off Mitchell Street, Upperthorpe, was discovered at around 6am.

A South Yorkshire Fire Service spokeswoman said the fire was extinguished quickly but had generated a lot of smoke.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Officers were called to reports of a fire at a block of flats in Mitchell Street, Sheffield at about 6am this morning.

“No one is believed to have been injured in the incident, however officers do believe the fire was started deliberately.

“Enquiries into the matter remain ongoing.”
