Recently retired Dotty Watkins has been given an honorary fellowship from the Royal College of Midwives.

Dotty was most recently head of midwifery and nurse director at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, and spent 40 years working for the NHS.

Among many things, the honour recognises Dotty’s leadership and commitment to ensuring maternity services met the needs of the women they served.

She said: “I am so very grateful to be honoured in this way for doing something I loved.

“It is wonderful to know that others recognised and valued my contribution to women, their families and midwives. Thanks to all those who have been involved in making this award possible.”

Dotty’s many innovations in Sheffield include the establishment of a team that provides care for women who choose care outside of current guidelines.

She enabled the development of a neonatal rapid access clinic to reduce neonatal readmissions for babies with feeding problems and jaundice.

Dotty was also instrumental in setting up the Voices of Jessop Wing Choir. The choir performs regularly with the Cornerstone Brass Band and the next event will be a Christmas programme in early December.
