IT was the Sheffield crowds that made the day special, according to council chief executive John Mothersole.

“The thing that has always impressed me about this city is the Sheffield crowd,” he said.

“Once again Sheffield turned out, not just in great numbers, but in a spirit of great support.

“Lord Coe made it clear that what has made this day great is that the city’s sporting history has been recognised.

“On Wednesday we say farewell and good luck to all our athletes.

“Sheffield has shown, once again, that it has played more than its part for England.

“I am very proud for Sheffield today.”
