Top award for inspiring Sheffield teen

An inspirational teenager who goes the extra mile to volunteer at a Sheffield park despite suffering from chronic arthritis has received a top national award.

UTC Sheffield student Lauren Hopkins, 16, has received a Diana Courageous Citizen Award.

Lauren Hopkins, aged 16, picked up a Princess Diana Courageous Citizen Award in honour of her volunteer work at Norfolk Heritage Park in the face of adversity.

She said: “I was pleased to be given an award for something I love doing. I like helping others if I can, and enjoy my volunteering very much.”

The brave youngster was put forward for the accolade by staff at University Technical College Sheffield, where she is studying creative and digital media, and also by her hospital consultant treating her for arthritis.

Brigidin Crowther, assistant principal at UTC Sheffield, said: “We are immensely proud of Lauren who has overcome major personal challenges to thrive in her education, help her peers and volunteer in the local community.

“This is all despite suffering chronic pain from arthritis, which has required hospital treatment.

“Lauren puts others first and is always looking for ways to help and encourage her fellow UTC students.

“She really strives to make a difference, and is an inspiration to all those who know her.”

She was presented with the award at the city centre campus on Matilda Street on Wednesday, July 13.

Tessy Ojo, chief executive of The Diana Award, said: “The Diana Award is proud to recognise incredible young people, like Lauren, who have the confidence and courage to stand up for what they believe.”

Since 1999, more than 47, 000 young people have been recognised with a Diana Award for making a difference in their communities.
