Rotherham’s highways maintenance team has won a prestigious award after being judged to be this year’s Best Service Team in the annual awards by the Association for Public Service Excellence.
Paul O’Brien, chief executive of APSE, which recognise the best in frontline public services, said: “It takes operational know-how to deliver good public services.
But it takes passion and ambition to deliver excellence. These winning councils, such as Rotherham, have proven their commitment to delivering excellent local public services to their local communities and should be very proud of their achievements.”
Coun Gerald Smith, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Development for Rotherham Council, described it as ‘fantastic news’ and ‘well-deserved’.
He added: “This award is a really terrific achievement for Rotherham and I would like to congratulate the staff in these teams who are doing a very difficult job in maintaining our road network at a very difficult time.
“Obviously APSE liked what it heard - investment in street lighting, our use of new technology on the highway network, and our partnership working within the winter maintenance programme. The association clearly recognises that even in these challenging times we are getting it right here in Rotherham.”
The authority has also recently started a £3 million scheme to improve street lights by replacing bulbs with LED units.
