TOP 100: The stars shooting up the Top 100 this year

The biggest companies tend to appear in the Top 100 each year without dramatic changes in their placings '“ but further down dramatic leaps are more common.

Premdor, the Barnsley door and window manufacturer, has shot up from 61st in the list to 37th this time. Turnover has climbed from £59.6m last year to £94m this time. It is the biggest rise at the top end of the Top 100 this year.

Pre-tax profit fell back from £4.3m to £3.7m this time.

Clowes Developments (UK) based at the southern most reaches of the city region, in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, is another big riser - from 98th to 50th this time, with £76.6m turnover, generating £26.6m pre-tax profit - and all with only 37 employees.

The company was founded in 1964 by chairman Charles W Clowes. It has freehold ownership of 41 industrial, commercial, office, retail and residential properties in England. It has offices in London and Derbyshire.

Wildgoose Construction is another success story. Turnover has climbed to £49.7m this year, making it a new arrival in the table at 83th.

The Alfreton, Derbyshire, based company has just created jobs for 10 trainee staff, and they come on top of the 10 staff that have been taken on since the end of last year. Wildgoose has just secured £8m of orders including a £2.6m refurbishment project for Gleadless Primary School in Sheffield, a £2.7m contract for a retail and commercial project at Chelmonds Cross, Birmingham and two pubs for Marston’s brewers.
