TOP 100: Old family firm bursting with growth plans

Chief executive Edward Naylor is the great-grandson of the founder and the 126-year-old company enjoyed record turnover last year.

It has just bought Dewsbury concrete company with a £2 million turnover and is moving it – and its own concrete lintel business from Ossett – to a newly-acquired freehold site at Barugh Green, Barnsley.

The firm’s traditional base is in Cawthorne, Barnsley, making pipes and bricks and it will continue to be the headquarters of the clay business.

But this week it is moving its group headquarters to Wombwell, which is also the new base for its plastics business. The company’s Specialist Plastics business, formerly Amco Plastics is being relocated from Wath.

Naylor has invested £2.3 million in a former Maplin site on Valley Road, Womb-well, in one of the biggest investments the company has made.

Edward Naylor said plans to relocate were set in motion last year when they ran out of space.

He added: “We have had a busy 12 months but things are picking up and we are always on the look out for new business. We export to 65 countries and I’ve just got back from Sri Lanka.”

The company also has factories in Fife and Hyde and owns the Yorkshire Flowerpots business, the UK’s largest manufacturer of ceramic flowerpots.

In its most recently filed accounts, turnover was £46.8m, enough to push it up from 92nd to 88th in the Top 100 table.

Pre-tax profits were £1.74m – up from £1.3m the year previous – making it the fifth most profitable company in Barnsley.

Last year, the company was the “winner of winners” in the EEF Future Manufacturing competition.

Symphony Holdings Limited was the borough’s most profitable business. It made £10.9m pre-tax profit on £157.1m turnover.

It is the UK’s largest privately-owned manufacturer of fitted kitchen, bedroom and bathroom furniture.
