TOP 100: How companies qualify for The Star Business and Shorts' Top 100

To be included in the Star Business/Shorts Top 100, companies must be independent businesses, holding companies in a UK group, or the ultimate UK holding company of an overseas-controlled group.

The business must be up to date when it comes to filing accounts with Companies House and the company must be based in or undertake its principal trading activities in Sheffield City Region.

It is defined by the Local Enterprise Partnership as having a principal trading addresses or registered office with one of the following post codes: S1-S79, S80-S81, S99, DN1-DN12, DE4, DE45, DE55, DE6, DN14 9, DN22, NG19 7-NG19 8, NG20 8, NG20 9, NG22 0, SK17 and NG16 6.

Figures are compiled by Shorts using the latest published financial information at the time of carrying out this survey filed at Companies House and financial data provided by Bureau van Dijk’s Fame.

Where companies have submitted figures for longer or fewer than 52 weeks, the figures have been annualised on a pro-rata basis.

One of the most likely reasons for omission is that the business isn’t registered in Sheffield City Region and no figures are available for its operations.

The profit and employment tables were derived from companies whose turnover was high enough to justify a Top 100 listing.

Tables listing the most profitable companies in each district have been drawn up according to postal towns. This can mean that a company based within one local authority’ s boundaries appears in the listing for another area.

Most companies that have dropped out of the tables will have done so because their turnover is now too low to justify inclusion, or their registered office is no longer within the Sheffield City Region.

Every effort has been made to ensure the details are as comprehensive and accurate as possible, but private company information can be incomplete.

Efforts have also been made to ensure that no qualifying company has been omitted.

In certain circumstances the compilers of the table have made exceptions to the qualification criteria and their decision is final.
