TOP 100: Avanti stays top as LPG demand grows

UGI Corporation purchased Derbyshire-based Shell Gas (LPG) UK in October 2011, making American-owned UGI one of the largest liquid propane gas providers in the world.

It immediately rebranded Shell, which was established in the 1960s, to AvantiGas.

AvantiGas is headquartered at Markham Vale.

Neill Cordon, HR director, said they benefited from being in Chesterfield.

He added: “We are able to recruit quality staff locally and continue to develop employees’ skills in conjunction with Chesterfield College and other local providers.”

Avanti Gas is the 18th largest company in Sheffield City Region and made £11.2million profit last year.

United Rental Group was second with £10.1m pre-tax profit.

Celebrating its 25th year in 2016, it is one of the UK’s biggest rental vehicle companies, supplying almost 600 independent car hire and leasing firms, who subscribe to its United Rental System.

Last year the company expanded operations overseas and opened in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In only seven months the company has grown the business in the UK to 1,000 vehicles and four members of staff, headed by the UK-based group managing director Ian Lawrence who has been with the company since it began.

European multinational car rental company Sixt SE acquired United Kenning Rental Group in 2000 and shortly after dropped ‘Kenning’ from its name to become United Rental Group.

It operates out of Chesterfield where it employs more than 50 of 424 nationally.

Established in 1953 and the UK’s first VW dealer, Gordon Lamb is now a third generation family company employing 200 which boosted profits from £1.5m to £2.1m this year.
