Tia bakes cakes for Ollie

A South Yorkshire schoolgirl is hosting a bake sale, to raise funds for the Sheffield hospital that saved her brother.

Tia Malik, aged 10, is busy baking up a storm, along with mum Laura, for the upcoming sale at her primary school, which she’s hosting as part of The Children’s Hospital Charity Bake it Better Day.

Tia and her family, which includes parents Laura and Gavin and their eight children, have already taken part in various fundraising events to raise £1600 for the hospital, where five-year-old Ollie was treated after his bowel perforated at just two days old.

Laura, of Worksop, said: “After his bowel perforated at just two days old, Ollie had to be rushed to Sheffield Children’s Hospital for life-saving surgery. A week later, he was diagnosed with Hirschsprung’s disease, a rare condition that results in constant blockages in the digestive system and abdominal pain. After his operation Ollie had to spend three weeks in hospital and has since undergone ten trips to theatre, to try and correct his condition.

“No matter how many procedures Ollie went through, nothing was working. He didn’t play, he didn’t want to do anything, and he was missing loads of nursery. He was in agony all the time. There was never a day without it, so just before his fourth birthday we decided to get him a stoma bag and it was the best decision we ever made for him. Now Ollie is no longer in constant pain and can play with all the other children.

“We were told that if we had to go further afield he might not even have made it through the journey. We’ve got such an amazing hospital on our doorstep where everyone is willing to give you their time and it means everything to us. Tia is such a thoughtful little girl and she really wanted to do something for the hospital that saved her brother’s life.”

Tia’s bake sale will be held at Prospect Junior School on June 27.
