Thousands of new trees to be planted in Sheffield

More than 3,000 new trees are to be planted in Sheffield thanks to a £2,500 grant.

Rail operator First TransPennine Express, along with the Forestry Commission, awarded the cash to the Sheffield Urban Woodlands Project, which will see new mixed native woodland trees planted at four sites in Sheffield.

Throughout winter, 300 volunteers will plant the trees in Arbourthorne, Mosborough, Sky Edge and Manor.

The project is one of 17 that will share more than £26,000 in ‘Green Grants’ funding this year.

Grants are awarded to community-based environmental improvement projects across the First TransPennine Express network.

The Forestry Commission has helped run the scheme since 2008.

A record number of applications were received this year.
