Ian Morgan set up the online fundraising page on Thursday night and in the first 15 hours over £2,000 had been donated.

He said: “On Wednesday, April 13 five South Yorkshire police officers were injured, one of whom received a fractured skull.

“This was after confronting a male who had armed himself with an axe.

“These officers were just doing their job, which is undervalued and often under appreciated.

“This money is to help them in anyway we can, so that they can try to come to terms with the events of that night.

“I know many serving officers will be donating to collections at their local stations but thought the wider community or people who don’t get the chance to contribute to a collection might want to help raise a few quid to help. Even if it just for a night out to help those involved come to terms with the events of last night.”

A number of messages of support for the officers have been left on the fundraising site.

Lee Reed, a member of the public who has donated £100, said: “I hope all injured officers involved in this incident make a speedy recovery. As a member of the public, thanks for keeping us safe.

Joe Vincent wrote: “Get well soon. Could have been any one of us on the line. Thoughts with you and your families.”

A retired officer, named only as Rob H, wrote: “People should realise what officers have to face. Best wishes from a retired colleague.”

Craig Farrell added: “The Government don’t appreciate the job you do every single day and the risks you constantly take. There are millions of people who do though, and we all are wishing you a speedy recovery.”
