The event was hosted by Thorne Sea Cadets and was aimed at encouraging parents and children to go along and see what exciting activities are on offer at the youth group, especially on the water.

Those who came along could try their hand at canoeing, kayaking, rowing or simply just going for a motorboat ride down the canal.

The VIP guest of honour at the event was HM Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire Andrew Combe who went along to join in the fun too.

After he was greeted by the commanding officer of TS Gambia, PO Dave Redmile, he was then treated to a trip in their motorboat by the young cadets whilst they explained just what a sea cadet does and the skills they needed to learn to be able to safely take to the water.

He was then taken rowing in one of the new sea cadet boats where he actually took to the oars too.

The day ended with a barbecue by the waterside and then a karaoke session in the cadets hall.

The Sea Cadets are looking for new recruits to join them at their base at TS Gambia, Lock Hill, Thorne.

Anyone interested should phone 07743 925191.
