MOTORISTS and cyclists in Rotherham are being urged to take extra care on the roads because of thieves stealing drain covers to sell as scrap metal.
In January alone, 96 metal covers were pinched leaving the roads in a dangerous state.
It costs Rotherham Council around £120 to replace a drain cover and bosses are stressing it takes cash out of the budget left for maintaining roads.
Coun Gerald Smith said: “These thieves have no regard for safety or cost and we would urge the public to report any incident they believe to be suspicious.”
