A thief risked his life by crossing the tracks at Rotherham train station to snatch a bag from a woman on the opposite platform.

British Transport Police said the man struck as his victim was waiting to catch a train from platform two on Thursday, February 4.

He ran back across the tracks with the bag before discarding it after taking out the money inside.

PC Roy Percival said: “The victim was waiting on platform two at around 11.20pm when a man on the opposite platform climbed onto the tracks and crossed over.

“He snatched the woman’s bag and fled back across the tracks and out of the station, taking money and discarding the bag as he ran.

“Not only was this a frightening experience for the victim, but the man endangered his life trespassing on the railway.”
