"This will be a tough task following the referendum that has pitted different regions and different parts of the country against each other, but we are hopeful for the future".

Indeed we have been calling for a 2020 vision for Yorkshire that addresses our challenges and opportunities as a region.

"After all we have a population slightly bigger than Scotland, and an economy twice that of Wales, and we need similar powers to create a Yorkshire that works for all.

“We at Yorkshire First agree people want more powers over what happens in their lives, with more powers at town and parish level and more regional decision making – with less being done by London".

The Yorkshire Assembly advocates, whose leaders include Barnsley East Grimethorpe councillor Tony Devoy, adds: "And we do not want to see powers brought back from Brussels just to stop in Westminster. We also seem to get no guarantees with the lost EU funding that has been critical to our region over the last 30 years.

“We find it questionable that there will be no General Election, and no second referendum on any deal Theresa May is going to negotiate for the UK on Brexit. After all, she accused Gordon Brown of 'running scared of the people's verdict' when he refused to hold a General Election after becoming PM in 2007.

"It's difficult to see what the new Prime Minister's vision is precisely but, whichever direction the country travels in, we will make sure Yorkshire’s voice will be heard."
