Theatre group given helping hand as closure threatened

a UNDER-THREAT group for adults with learning disabilities has received a welcome offer of support.

Cross The Sky Theatre Company, which has run for 10 years in Barnsley, may have to close as its plans to be self-financing through a social care scheme have been held up by a slow assessment system.

But members are to do bucket collections at Pontefract Racecourse to raise cash after the Wakefield attraction heard of the group’s plight.

The first will be at a family race day this Sunday, June 25.

Ruth Jones, manager, said: “We have tried to support and help our members as best we can but have ourselves got very frustrated by a system that seems unnecessarily complicated and drawn out. “It was just wonderful to be actually approached by Richard Hammill and his team at the racecourse who are so willing to help us.”

Both Cross the Sky and its Sheffield counterpart In the Boat Theatre Company are run by arts organisation Action Space Mobile.

Bucket collections also take place in July and August.
