This week The Star was crowned best regional daily newspaper in the Yorkshire and Humber area.
We’re absolutely delighted with the accolade and thoroughly enjoyed picking up the trophy at the O2 Media Awards in York.
It is testament to the outstanding team we have working at The Star who, despite huge changes in the newsroom and the drive towards digital first news, have continued to produce a top class newspaper six days a week.
Competition for the award is intense. There are some excellent dailies in our region, so to come out on top has made us all very proud.
It has also made us take stock of why the judges picked us to win.
Yes we work hard – in fact the amount of different roles a modern-day journalist has to fulfil is constantly evolving.
We also care passionately about our region, the people who live here, the businesses and – even if we are determined to hold them to account – the public services that play such a vital role in people’s lives.
Every day we aim to produce the best possible newspaper for our readers.
The award shows that more often than not we’re getting it right.
Over the past year we have been involved in some amazing stories and events.
The Tour de France coming through our area was one of the high spots while reflecting on the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster was particularly poignant for many who worked on our excellent special supplement.
We have done this while also ensuring that our website – which was highly commended at the awards – continues to be the place that breaks news first.
The media industry is continually changing.
From the birth of the Internet through to growth of social media, the way people receive their news is totally different to the days when newspapers were dominant.
But we have shown that there is no excuse for standards slipping.
Our journalism is still top class and we continue to reach thousands of people across our region through the printed product.
As ever the most important person is the reader.
We listen to what you say and what you want from your Star.
Winning a prestigious award is very nice but being a part of a reader’s daily routine is what we’re about.
We’re the best because you demand it of us.
