Any deal with Azerbaijani businessman Hafiz Mammadov about buying the club is all but dead in the water with Mr Mandaric exploring every possibility to accelerate Wednesday’s return to the Premier League.

It is hard to be shocked anymore in football so when a takeover drags on for so long and repeated messages are broadcast from the club about difficulties that the proposed owner is having, then Wednesdayites would have been fully prepared for the news.

However, far from it being doom and gloom for the Owls it should be seen as a positive sign that Mr Mandaric has the best interests of the club at heart.

Wednesday have enjoyed an encouraging start to their Championship campaign but there’s no doubt that for the club to mount a bid for a Premier League return they need more investment.

Mr Mandaric understands this and is prepared to step aside once a suitable buyer demonstrates he’s able to complete a deal.

It’s as you were with the Owls under Mr Mandaric, which is no bad thing for the time being at least.
