‘Terrible tragedy’: Home Secretary pays tribute to police officer killed in Sheffield crash

The Home Secretary has paid tribute to the police officer killed in a collision in Sheffield yesterday.

Priti Patel, whose department has responsibility for policing, tweeted: “The saddest news. Deeply tragic and my thoughts are with the family of this distinguished officer.”

The Mayor of Sheffield City Region, Dan Jarvis, has also paid tribute to the 40-year-old officer killed in the crash on Nether Lane, Ecclesfield yesterday.

He said: “Devastating news. It is always a terrible tragedy when a police officer loses their life in the line of duty.

“My condolences are with their family and South Yorkshire Police colleagues.

“It’s a stark reminder that our emergency services risk their lives every day to keep us safe.”

The officer, who has not yet been named, was riding a police motorcycle and responding to calls that a silver BMW had failed to stop for officers when the collision occurred.

The police motorbike was involved in a crash with a Toyota Avenis, which was driven by a 64-year-old man.

The on-duty officer was pronounced dead a short time later.

An investigation into the collision is ongoing today.

Accident investigators spent hours at the crash scene yesterday in a bid to establish exactly what happened.

Witnesses to the incident are urged to come forward and the force also wants to hear from motorists with dashcam footage which may assist with the investigation.
