Sheffield tennis professional Jonny Marray got a confidence boosting win last week in Istanbul.

After three months of injury and inconsistent results it was good to see Jonny getting back to the business of winning matches and tournaments.

“I’ve felt the wins coming for a while to be honest, even though I lost early at the US open, which is of course disappointing, I felt it was my best performance since my injury leading into Wimbledon.

“I came back from America with some new goals and after speaking to my coach we put in some really strong weeks practise.

“It was nice to train feeling I could give it 100% on my calf. We worked on a few things and I went into the event feeling really positive about my game.”

Having dropped in the world rankings due to losing points over recent weeks it was important that Jonny got some points to boost his ranking up a bit, but clearly it is focusing on his performances which is the No. 1 priority for Jonny for the remainder of the year.

“Its so easy panic when results aren’t going your way and then players can try and chase results by playing tournament and after tournament, I’ve made those mistakes myself in the past, but ultimately it has the opposite effect and you start to focus on results and performances suffer, your mental state isn’t right. You have to be tough mentally when the results don’t come your way and remember that it is performances that deliver the outcomes you want.”

Jonny will be hoping to continue his level of performances this week as he travels to France to play in the Metz ATP 250 event.

This week he will be partnering up with fellow GB doubles player Jamie Murray. Jonny and Jamie were regular partners a few years ago and had some good success together. Lets hope they can pick up the reins quickly.
