A YOUNG girl has been left without a father after an 18-year-old man was stabbed to death on a Doncaster street corner.

Joseph Smith’s pregnant girlfriend Hayley Webster, who is expecting their second child, has been left distraught by the horrific killing in Moorends on Wednesday evening.

A mountain of floral tributes has built up on the corner of Barnsley Road and Locarno Road where Joseph died from a single wound to the chest.

Joseph’s heartbroken dad Charles Henry Smith yesterday stood forlornly at the murder scene gazing at the flowers.

“I just want to fetch him back,” said Mr Smith, who later travelled to Sheffield to identify his eldest son’s body as part of the police enquiry.

Among the tributes were a bunch of flowers from Hayley, their daughter Ellie-May, and the ‘Bump’ that would have grown to become Joseph’s second child later this year.

“Always in our heart, mush, never be forgotten, love you so much,” it read.

Joseph, who lived with his parents and seven brothers and sister on Darlington Grove, Moorends, was out of work at the time of his death and spent a lot of his time playing football, said his dad.

He said: “I was at home when I heard ambulances going past and I said to Joe’s mum, Betsy, I could hear police cars heading somewhere near Barnsley Road.

“I looked out the window and then someone rang to say Joe had been stabbed here.

“We came straight up but the police wouldn’t let me come to him. I said it was my son but they kept us back because the ambulance people were working on him. They kept jumping his heart

“My missus wanted to hold him but she couldn’t get to him. They tried to bring him back but I think he was already dead when he left here.

“His mum is in a right state now.”

Detectives confirmed they had launched a murder investigation today after Joseph’s death after South Yorkshire Police officers responded to a report of a man being stabbed on Locarno Road at the junction of Barnsley Road, Moorends at 6.20pm on Wednesday.

They said Joseph was certified dead later in Doncaster Royal Infirmary at about 7.40pm and a 15-year-old Moorends boy was arrested and charged with his murder.

A post-mortem examination showed he had died from a single stab wound to the chest. Mr Smith said he was planning a burial for his son.

The 15-year-old, who cannot be named, has been remanded in custody by Doncaster Youth Court until Thursday to await committal for trial at Sheffield Crown Court.
