The boys, aged 15 and 18 and said to be part of the ‘Top Corner Crew’ gang, have been convicted for their parts in frightening robbery and affray offences in Mount Pleasant Park, Nether Edge.

They have been sentenced to eight-month detention and training orders after being convicted at youth court and will spend four months in custody in a Young Offenders’ Institution, with the rest of their sentences being served in the community.

Police hailed the convictions today and said the case ‘sends a message to those involved in the gang culture that it will not be tolerated by the community, the police or the courts’.

Both teenagers were sentenced for being involved in three separate incidents in the park.

In the first on December 23, 2014, they were part of a group of 12 who carried out an unprovoked attack on a 16-year-old boy, kicking and punching him to the floor.

In May last year, they were involved in two robberies - the first which saw 10 people picking on three 15-year-olds and stealing their phones and cash.

They were then part of a large group that attacked a 17-year-old male and stole his phone.

Last summer, a public meeting heard desperate residents were threatening to take their law into their own hands to tackle teenage yobs threatening people with knives and committing serious assaults.

Police and council bosses are still considering the possibility of implementing a Public Space Protection Order in the area - which would make it an offence to gather in groups of two or more in Nether Edge or wear face coverings.

The proposed area for the zone runs from Batt Street to Glover Road and includes Staveley Road, Fieldhead Road, Witney Street, Herschell Road, Horner Road, Glover Road and a section of Abbeydale Road.

It is understood police are investigating whether the gang is linked to the serious disorder that occurred on Abbeydale Road on Bonfire Night.

Inspector Ian Stubbs, from the Sheffield South West local policing team, said: “On February 17, two members of an urban street gang known locally as the ‘Top Corner Crew’ were sentenced to eight months in custody.

“The two males aged 18 and 15 were convicted for their part in offences of Robbery and Affray in and around Mount Pleasant Park in May last year.

“As the local inspector I am really pleased with this result. It sends a message to those involved in the gang culture that it will not be tolerated by the community, the police or the courts and hopefully gives reassurance to the community that we take these matters seriously. We will continue to investigate all incidents involving the gang and leave no stone unturned in our efforts to convict those involved.”

“As ever I would encourage anyone with information about this gang or other criminal activity to come forward.”

Inspector Stubbs added an investigation into serious trouble on Abbeydale Road on Bonfire Night last year is ‘progressing well’ following the arrests of 15 people in connection with the incident.

He said he hoped to be in a position to update the public about further developments in the investigation ‘as soon as possible’.

On the night, fireworks were hurled across Abbeydale Road through moving traffic, causing damage to nearby businesses and cars.

Three police officers were injured, one seriously. The other two received minor burns and bruising after being hit by rockets.
