TWO sports clubs have teamed up for a fundraising event in aid of a fireman who was left with severe spinal injuiries following a freak accident.
Hallam FC and Hallamshire Golf Club are holding a golf day at the Lodge Moor course on Friday, followed by dinner in the club house and presentation of prizes to the winners of the day’s contest.
The event aims to raise funds for Gavin Walker, aged 27, of Thorpe Hesley, who was left paralysed after slipping on wet decking around a garden pool at his mother’s home in Brinsworth, and landing on his head in the water.
Organiser Andrew Sharman, of Hallam FC, said: “Gavin and his family have been presented with many problems – bathing, showering, having an accessible toilet – and at the moment he is confined to two downstairs rooms.
“Sadly Social Services have said that in order for them to make further modifications to his home, the family must raise £13,500.
“If they are able to modify the home so that Gavin is able to shower, dress and go to the toilet independently, there is a possibility that a job will be found for him working on computers within the fire service.”
Mr Sharman is urging more people to take part in the golf day.
Places cost £100 per person, which includes dinner.
