After a judge’s outburst against a 30-year-old career criminal arrested after bursting into a home, should we be surprised to hear that, as he was an alcoholic on disability benefit he couldn’t be jailed?
I didn’t know that being on disability benefit is a get-out-of-jail-free card. Now the judge is in danger of being castigated by his superiors for speaking out in court.
I used to be secretary to a heart surgeon. One day a solicitor rang to say a boy, aged 14, was to be sentenced for rape but his mum said his heart condition meant he couldn’t serve time and they wanted a surgeon’s opinion.
I took the notes to the surgeon who, without looking at them, said: “If he’s capable of rape, he’s capable of prison.”
