Symposium lifts lid on homelessness

The symposium will critically examine mainstream visual represenations of homelessness by drawing on the work of Mark Harvey, photographer in residence at Bank Street Arts.

Over the last four years, Mark’s work has been dedicated to understanding the layered complexities of homelessness and challenging the visual narratives that often accompany it. Mark has also overseen projects that have put cameras into the hands of homeless people, giving them some scope to document their own experiences and offer new representations of homelessness.

A spokesman for The Cathedral Archer Project said: “The symposium will also host Street View, an exhibition featuring photographs taken by people with lived experiences of homelessness, and Baggage, one of Mark’s recent projects, produced in collaboration with individuals using the Cathedral Archer Project.

“Mark will then lead seminar sessions around the subject of visual representation of homelessness and share examples of his work, alongside his current thinking around the critical questions raised during the residency.

“There’ll also be an opportunity for attendees to meet some of the photographers responsible for the images in Street View.”

The symposium will be held at Bank Street Arts, in Sheffield, on February 24. Mark Harvey’s exhibition, ‘Bed in a Box,’ will then run from February 27 to March 5.
