Swimming: Doncaster Dartes target medal haul at British Summer Championships

Doncaster Dartes are confident they can make a splash at the 2016 British Summer Championships.

Sixteen of Doncaster’s top swimmers are currently competing at Ponds Forge in Sheffield in an event which is the pinnacle of the competition calendar.

Joe Litchfield and Simon Kliment lead the charge for medals.

Litchfield recently won gold for Great Britain in the 200m individual medley at the European Junior Championships, an event where three Dartes swimmers have won medals over the last three years.

He also gained a fourth place in the 400IM and helped the 4x200 freestyle relay team to a finals place.

Kliment won a silver medal in the 200m backstroke at the International Children’s Games last week in Taiwan.

Competing for his home region of Bratislava in Slovakia, he also made an additional four finals in the competition.

The team of youngsters, who each train up to 20 hours a week, is led by chief coach Andrew Wallace who is also a coach on the England talent programme.

The British Championships see the top 24 swimmers in each event across Britain compete for honours.

Dartes are hopeful of a large haul of medals at both the British Summer Championships and English National Championships, which start on August 1 in Sheffield.

The Doncaster squad train at a variety of the town’s pools and do not have a permanent training base. They are voluntarily funded and rely on the fees paid by the swimmers and the proceeds of fundraising activities. Anyone interested in sponsoring the Dartes should contact [email protected].
