A suspect package in Rotherham turned out to be a hoax bomb.

South Yorkshire Police said a 'suspect package' found by a member of the public near to Magna on Temple Road, Rotherham, had been made to look like a bomb.

A cordon was put in place around the package until bomb disposal experts from the army assessed it.

An investigation is now underway.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "On Tuesday, police were called to Temple Road, Rotherham, following reports of a possible suspicious package.

"The explosive ordinance disposal unit attended and assessed the package, which was discovered to be a hoax.

"The area, which had been cordoned off as a precautionary safety measure, was declared safe and reopened.

"Police are now investigating the incident."
