Support for fight against Sheffield mail delivery office closure

More than 800 people have now signed a petition calling for the closure of a Sheffield delivery office to be stopped.

The petition about the delivery office on Ecclesall Road, Banner Cross, was presented to Sheffield Council’s full meeting earlier this week.

Royal Mail is considering the possibility of relocating the Sheffield South West office to the city centre, but says no decision has been made.

A motion asking the council to urge Royal Mail to consider the ‘difficulties’ residents would have if the office was merged was also supported on a cross-party basis.

Steph Gale, who started the petition, told the chamber she had only heard of the closure after visiting the office one day and started the petition to raise awareness.

She said: “I know there must be many more out there who have not had access to my petition and who are only just learning of the proposals.”

She said that it would be a ‘short-sighted decision’ to close the office, which was saved from closure 10 years ago.

“Royal Mail would lose a lot of customers to more customer-friendly providers,” she added.

Many residents who have supported the online petition have left comments saying how they would be affected.

Sylvia Ward wrote: “This is my sorting office. It would be nigh on impossible to get to Pond Street to collect a parcel during opening times not to mention practicalities around parking.”

Kath Peters added: “If the office closes how are the old people and the disabled supposed to traipse into town to pick up their letters or parcels?

“Not good thinking Royal Mail.

“This office is always busy.”

Royal Mail says the proposal is part of its plans to change the business as fewer people send letters and more firms deliver parcels.

There will be no compulsory redundancies if the plan does go ahead and staff, as well as trade unions, are being consulted.

A spokesman added: “Whenever a delivery office move goes ahead, we always consider alternative parcel pick-up facilities and offer customers alternative ways to receive undelivered items, including delivery to a neighbour, re-delivery or delivery to another address.”
