Supermarket would hit store

two general stores in a former South Yorkshire pit village will face closure if a Tesco supermarket is developed there.

The owner of one of the stores made the claim at a Treeton Parish Council meeting after a report Tesco may be interested in opening a small supermarket.

Jackie McMahon, owner of Treeton News, said: “If Tesco come to Treeton it will finish me and the other shop and our staff will lose their jobs.”

She also said her bid to re-open a post office in her shop had failed because the Post Office would not provide sufficient financial backing.

Council chairman Coun John Swift said they had not received any more information from Tesco after the company stated a month ago it may be interested.
