Supermarket re-opens after cash machine ram raid

The Tesco Express store in Crowle was targeted by thieves in the early hours of Saturday morning following the latest in a series of attacks in the area.

Police have spent the weekend at the scene combing the supermarket for clues while repairs to the front of the building - formerly a cinema - have been carried out.

Builders have made the foyer structurally safe and staff have worked around the clock to restock shelves.

It is believed the raiders used the digger to remove the cash machine from the building in the centre of the town at around 4.30am on Saturday before making their escape.

The attack is the sixth of its kind in recent weeks and comes just days after a cash machine was dragged from a wall at a Tesco supermarket in Hatfield.

Cash machines have also been targeted from shops and convenience stores in Blyth, Harthill in Worksop, Gainsborough and Epworth in recent weeks.

A spokesman for Tesco said: “We’re glad no-one was hurt in this incident and were shocked to hear about it.

“We’ll be working closely with the police to support their investigation.”

Anyone with information about the Crowle attack, should call Humberside Police on 101, quoting incident 113 of January 31.

It has been a bad week for Tesco after the supermarket giant also confirmed it would be closing its Doncaster Church View store and Mexborough Metro store with the loss of 180 jobs.
