'Suicide' of student, 19

Friends found the body of 19-year-old Adam Langton hanging from the loft at his Balby home when he failed to turn up for a farewell barbecue at his sister's house.

Only a few hours earlier Adam had packed his gear in a van and sent it down to London in readiness for starting a university course the next day.

But family and friends say Adam had been depressed and "quite scared" about starting further education.

When his body was cut down at his house in Regent Street by police on Tuesday evening they found the phrase "I am not a statistic" written on his arm. Officers found what they described as a suicide note which Adam's older sister, Becky Dennett, confirmed was in her brother's writing.

Ms Dennett, of Guildford Road, Wheatley, said she was expecting him to go to university on Wednesday and had invited him and some of his friends to a barbecue at her house on Tuesday.

But she told a Doncaster inquest: "He wasn't a very happy person. His health had deteriorated and he lost so much weight."

One of his friends, Ian Lindsey, who also lives in Regent Street, said Adam had called round earlier on Tuesday and kept talking about his fears about going to university.

"He was quite scared about moving," he said. "I think he was depressed and was on medication for it. Me and some other friends were going to help move his things into a removal van. He seemed nervous."

After the van drove away the friends went home but Ian and another man returned later to take him to the barbecue. When they got no answer to their knocks and phone calls they became concerned and broke down the front door after consulting Adam's sister.

Ian ran upstairs and found Adam's body hanging by a ligature. Paramedics called to the house said he had been dead for at least an hour.

A policeman found the single-sheet note on the landing and an empty pack of painkillers.

Coroner Stanley Hooper was told there were no suspicious circumstances and adjourned the inquest for further evidence.

Adam's mother, Kay Dennett, lives on the Isle of Man.
