Students from Sheffield are rowing 31 miles to raise cash for two city charities.

The University of Sheffield rowing club will carry out the challenge in September by rowing from Lincoln to Boston.

They hope to complete it in 4.5 hours and say the task dwarfs their usual rows of between two and seven kilometres.

Rosie Wilkins, of the Boston marathon rowing club, said: “Beyond the personal satisfaction of completing such a gruelling challenge, we are hoping to use this event to raise money for the club’s chosen charities.

“A portion of funds raised will be used to help us upgrade our tired fleet of boats that are in desperate need of improvements.”

Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Within Reach, which offers sport and facilities for the less able, will be supported.
