Students re-enact Battle of the Somme

A group of Sheffield schoolchildren took part in a re-enactment of the Battle of the Somme, after a local member of the Royal British Legion raised concerns that details of the historical event were being lost through changes to the school curriculum.

Ray Risk - the Royal British Legion’s county representative for Derbyshire - contacted Eckington School with his concerns and was invited to offer his insight and help develop the re-enactment.

The re-enactment, which involved year ten students, took place last month, and was followed by presentations from both Ray, who is an expery in the details of the events surrounding the Battle of the Somme, and the Mayor of Chesterfield, Coun Steve Brunt, who is himself a keen historian.

Ray said: “I feel it is vitally important that we always remember the sacrifice these men gave to maintaining the freedom we all enjoy today. We must also remember the sacrifice every lost serviceman and woman gives by laying down their lives.”

A spokesman for the school said: “The whole event gave a very powerful message to the students who came away from the event with a deep understanding about the impact this battle had on those present.”
