Students brave the elements in asylum protest

STUDENTS braved the wind, rain and cold to sleep rough on the Sheffield University concourse for 12 hours as part of a national event supporting asylum seekers.

The sponsored sleep-out under the concourse bridge was part of Student Volunteering Week and was co-ordinated by Student Action for Refugees.

The Still Human Still Here campaign supports rights for destitute asylum seekers, with money raised by the sleep-out donated to ASSIST – standing for Asylum Seeker Support Initiative Short Term.

“We think the Government should allow this small group to have the right to work after six months and support themselves until they are granted protection here, or until it is safe for them to return home,” said Emily Nicol of Student Action for Refugees.
