Students back Israel boycott

Have your say

SHEFFIELD University students have become the first in the Russell Group of elite universities to officially endorse a global campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel.

In a referendum open to the entire student body, 66 per cent of voters opted in favour of the ‘End the Israeli Occupation’ motion, which proposes the students’ union should ‘lobby the university to divest itself from and terminate any contracts with companies complicit in the occupation of the Palestinian territories’.

Some 3,303 students voted in total, with only 12 per cent of votes going against the motion and the remainder abstentions.

The motion was proposed by the university’s Palestine Society.
