Tosrion Group is seeking permission from Sheffield Council to demolish buildings on Bailey Street - including the former Bailey Street Garage - and build an eight or nine-storey apartment block with 256 apartments.

Documents submitted with the application said the development would consist of 85 studio apartments and 171 'study bedrooms' and just one disabled parking bay. Cycle parking would also be provided.

A statement said: "In the construction phase, the proposed development will create a number of jobs and potential apprenticeship opportunities as well as benefiting local shops and services as those employed on-site bring custom. In the operational phase, the new residents will increase expenditure in the local economy."

The proposals come after similar plans were announced for a 26-storey tower block on Milton Street and a 22-storey block on High Street.

The statement added: "The site is located in a sustainable location, is in accordance with the council’s adopted policies directing residential and student accommodation development to the city centre and has no significant physical, environmental or infrastructure constraints that would preclude its redevelopment.

"The application site is previously developed land and makes appropriate use of the site in terms of density and providing accommodation in close proximity to services, facilities and both universities.

"It is considered that there are no other reasons why planning consent should be withheld and therefore it is respectfully requested that planning permission is granted."

Sheffield Council is due to make a decision on the application by August 8.
