STRONG winds have battered South Yorkshire overnight - uprooting trees across the county and leading to dangerous driving conditions.

Firefighters were called out to the M1 motorway between Junctions 31 at Aston and 30 at Barlborough at 5.45am today after a lorry was blown over and ended up down a banking.

The lorry driver was trapped in his vehicle and had to climb out of his windscreen when firefighters removed the glass.

He escaped unharmed.

Trees have blown over on Underbank, Stocksbridge; Priory Road, Sharrow and Herries Road, Sheffield, leading to road closures.
