The beautiful game has been thrown open to older people in Sheffield thanks to a new project delivering ‘walking football’.
Wisewood Sports Centre in Laird Road is running weekly sessions of the nation’s favourite sport, with those taking part asked to walk instead of run.
Walking football is aimed at men and women aged over 55.
The project is backed by the FA’s Just Play initiative, which aims to make football more accessible and inclusive.
Played on the centre’s artificial grass pitch, the first session included a community police team and a bank manager still in his suit!
The rules are the same as normal football but players walk – and over-head-kicks and sliding tackles are banned.
It was held by Harrogate Town FC’s top scorer from last season, Ashley Worsfold. He said: “I was impressed with the commitment and determination on show. It was great to see men and women playing. Most of all, everyone had a lot of fun, which is really what this is all about.”
Sessions will be at the centre every Wednesday from 11am to noon, priced £2 per person.
