STREET pastors have been credited with helping to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour among night-time revellers.

There are 21 volunteers who go out in Chesterfield and are on hand to look after people who are drunk and to defuse confrontations.

There have been 24 fewer victims of violence in the town centre since the scheme became operational and over Christmas violent crime in the town centre declined by 50 per cent.

Community safety officer, Joe Tomlinson, said: “They have been magnificent.”
