Stone carving greets visitors

NATIONALLY-renowned stone carver Marcia Bennett-Male is chipping away to create a warm welcome to greet visitors as they arrive at the Wentworth Castle estate in Stainborough, near Barnsley.

The three-and-a-half ton stone has been positioned just inside the Parkland at Stainborough and is a type of sandstone, known as Blackster, which came from a quarry at Dunhouse in Northumberland.

The same type of stone was used in the acclaimed restoration of the nearby Strafford Gate.

The words ‘Wentworth Castle’ will be carved into the stone together with Wentworth Castle Trust’s logo, which features an illustration of the 18th century Stainborough Castle
