Still a trick or two up Martin's sleeve

GUEST presenter Martin Daniels "came out" on air this week while taking over Radio Sheffield's morning show from Howard Pressman.

He told listeners: "Yes I am the Martin Daniels who was presenter of TV's Game For A Laugh. And I am the son of magician Paul Daniels."

Listening to him on the radio he sounds just like his dad.

And does he like it? Not a lot!

"A lot of people have said that in the past but it's inevitable. It's something that has been with me all my life," he laughs.

"Even when I had my own television show every week I was referred to as 'Oh are you Paul's son?'

"I've even been introduced on stage as 'Welcome to Paul Daniels' son Martin.'"

Like his father - Martin's mum was Paul Daniels' first wife - he's a magician but, as Martin puts its: "He is a magician who does comedy, I am a comic who does magic."

Martin, aged 44, is morning show presenter on Radio Lincolnshire but has popped over to Sheffield for the week to ring the changes - while Howard has made the reverse journey.

He's worked in over 20 pantos - he's in Peter Pan at the Lincoln theatre Royal this Christmas - cruise ships and the clubs and well as many TV shows. He knows South Yorkshire very well. He lives near Doncaster and in the late Seventies and early Eighties honed his act in working men's clubs.

The stint on Radio Sheffield came about after he shared a train journey with presenter Toby Foster.

His dad taught him his first trick, a version of the Indian rope trick.

He says: "He used to do it with three pieces of string when he told us the story of the Three Bears.

"I remember being back stage and doing an impression of him to the dancers. I'd be about ten or eleven.

"On one particular night I was getting more laughs than usual and looked around and he was behind me. I was caught red-handed.

"He said now I knew the lines he'd better teach me the trick!"
